Valparaiso comes from Valle Paraíso, the " Paradise Valley " . The sailors used to call it the " Pacific Jewel ", but its inhabitants, being less poets, prefer " Valpo ".
During the maritime trade, boats used to arrive empty, in order to be filled on the harbor. Most of them were stabilized with metal panels at the bottom. This worthless cargo was left behind after the trade.
People of " Valpo " started to protect their home with this metal. To avoid rust, they covered the corrugated iron with the resistant and colorful painting used for boats. This good idea has created a crazy urban landscape, unique to the world.
From the top of the hills, you can see the roofs of houses so often that the architects of "Valpo" call it "the fifth front".
