Down the mountain, in the southern part of the island, there is a small farm where Philippa regularly comes to pick her tomatoes, buy cheese, or take care of Iokasti, the farmer's daughter. In the yard, Lea, a young German woman on a farm internship, cuts vegetables to dry them. She is one of those newcomers who have left an oppressive city life, hoping to find a simpler and more authentic existence in Naxos.
With people around taking care of her, little Iokasti shines. She is lively, intelligent and a bit restless. She shows us the surrounding land, as proud as a great landowner. Philippa and I somehow follow this five-year-old girl running with rabbit ears between the bushes and the dry stones. Iokasti started a theatrical impersonation of the adult living with her, mimicking her growling grandmother or arguing parents.
On the way back, Philippa describes her daily life. I do more and more activities with the children of the island. There are babysitting, like you have seen with Iokasti, but also workshops organized in the cultural center that we created two years ago. We give music lessons, drawing lessons, do some theater… Some villages sometimes ask us to come and tell stories in schools.
