Nick Merlock Jackson is an explorer. When he is not guiding tourists in the city, he writes and draws. He studied art school in Chicago five years ago. After graduation, he left for a humanitarian mission through the Peace Corp, an American agency independent of the government.
«In 2013, I found myself propelled in Ukraine for two years, without knowing anything about this country. I spent the first year learning the language. Ukraine was then in the midst of a political transition : the popular uprising was overthrewing the current government. I was in Kiev when the protesters occupied the public buildings and destroyed the statues of Lenin with hammers. The following year, I could record countless testimonies thanks to an Ukrainian friend. I was all the time in the street, trying to meet people and speak with them. I wanted to compare a maximum of points of view, to understand what had happened. It was crazy for me to witness a revolution. Nevertheless, I think that change must come with democracy. We should be able to progress by voting, without spilling blood.»
Back in the USA, Nick published Ukraine Diaries, a fanzine that tells about his trip.
It’s a preview of the final result : he is now working on an expanded version of his story, illustrating a selection of the testimonies collected.
