We finally reach the place. In a mountain fold, the ground is covered
by dead leaves and sweet chesnuts. The trunks of the trees, giant and gnarled
living sculptures, remind me of the olive trees of Naxos.

The chestnut was the base of the Corsican food. Every time a family got a new child,
the would plant a tree. The shoots were grafted to design the owners:
the tree with the parallel branches was a "Luciani", the one with the lower branches
was a "Casanova", etc. The most numerous had the most to eat : simple.

In the past years, several trees have caught diseases.
« It's normal that they got sick », says an old man to Menehould.
« No one comes to speak with them anymore.»
